Gold Two Ounces 2022 Opal - Great Southern Land, Coin from Australia - detailed information

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.

On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).

Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 200 DOLLARS ·.

The effigy is smaller than usual, allowing for more space in the centre of the obverse which is patterned with rays radiating from the centre.

The reverse of the coin features a central opal insert displaying its beautiful array of colour in the shape of the Australian continent.

Mined in three Australian states, opal is a colourful gemstone which in its most precious form is renowned for a spectacular "play of colours". The precious insert is encircled by representations of iconic Australian animals including the kangaroo, emu, koala, echidna, wombat and bilby.

Also included around below right on the reverse is the coin’s 2022 year-date, its weight and fineness 2oz 9999 GOLD, and on the left - the Perth Mint’s P mint mark. The designer's initials AH (for Aleysha Howarth) are on the body of the emu.
