The Australian two ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

This coin commemorates the 175th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Victoria. The second longest reigning British monarch, Queen Victoria ruled over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for more than six decades, from 20 June 1837 until 22 January 1901.

On 20 June 1837, following the death of King William IV, his niece, Princess Victoria became Queen at the tender age of 18. Her Coronation was held at Westminster Abbey a year later on 28 June 1838. The Coronation was a significant occasion in British Royal history, with more than 400,000 people pouring into London to see the new Queen being crowned.

Queen Victoria was the figurehead of a vast Empire expanding from the United Kingdom to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Africa and India.
