The Australian two ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

The obverse of the coin displays two effigies of Queen Elizabeth II. In a larger circle below, her current definitive portrait depicting her crowned old head; she is facing right and wears the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
In a smaller circle above, the 1953 wreathed portrait of the Queen by Mary Gillick, used on Australia's last pre-decimal coinage.
Behind the portraits, a fan of wattle (a native Australian plant).
Running continuously around the rim, the Queen's legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2oz 9999 Au 2022 200 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "2 oz 9999 Au" means "two ounces of 99.99% gold" - Au is abbreviated from the Latin word for gold, Aurum. |

The reverse coin depicts the Shield of the Royal Coat of Arms, which is quartered and represents England (three lions, in the top left and bottom right quadrants), Scotland (a rampant lion in the upper right quadrant) and Ireland (a harp below left). The sections for Scotland and Ireland have frosted background.
In he background, an artistic interpretation of the mantle from the Royal Arms - originally a linen cover on the back of a medieval knight's helmet, and two figurative flower stems each combining an English rose, Irish shamrock and Scottish thistle, together with Australian wattle - Australia's national floral emblem.
On three lines above right, the inscription H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH 1952 | 2022.
The Perth Mint’s P mint mark is in the left field. |
