Coin | Gold Two Ounces 2017 Dragon and Phoenix |

The Australian two ounces gold piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin is part of the Perth Mint's Chinese Myths and Legends series, and features the Dragon and Phoenix.
The Mint says about it: In Chinese culture, the dragon is revered as a divine mythical creature, a symbol of power, strength, wealth and good fortune, and it is often portrayed in pursuit of a chasing a luminous or flaming pearl. The flaming pearl is viewed as a metaphor for wisdom, enlightenment and spiritual essence. It is also said to rid a person of their troubles and bring them career success as well as fortune and good health. Dragons are frequently depicted in pursuit of the flaming pearl, this is often represented through swirling through mist, smoke and shadows. |
