The Australian 20 cent coin was first introduced with decimalisation on 14 February 1966 when it replaced the pre-decimal Australian florin, to which it is equal in size and mass. The original reverse design by Stuart Devlin has not been changed since its introduction. The denomination is occasionally used by both the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint to issue collector coins, which are legal tender in Australia - such as this one. Much-loved Australian children’s book, Edward the Emu by Sheena Knowles and Rob Clement, is highlighted in the third release in the Royal Australian Mint’s and Children’s Book Council of Australia’s partnership, promoting reading to young audiences. Each year around Australia, children, schools and families celebrate the joy of reading one week more than any other - Book Week. A long-standing tradition of nearly 80 years, Book Week sees children dress as a character from their favourite book, enjoy story time, and fall further in love with reading. For a third year, the Royal Australian Mint has partnered with the Children’s Book Council of Australia to produce a coin featuring an adored Australian children’s book. In 2023, Edward the Emu celebrated 35 years since it was first published. Edward the Emu was shortlisted in 1989 as the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Picture Book of the Year. This year’s release includes a 20-cent copper-nickel uncirculated coin in card or anniversary edition of the book and a gold-plated uncirculated version of the coin in a deluxe edition of the book. These coins are Non-Circulating Legal Tender (collector issue). No coins of this type have been released into circulation. | ||||||
