Coin | Two Dollars 2018 Changeover |
---|
|
The two dollar coin denomination (written as $2) was introduced in Australia in 1988, replacing the earlier banknotes. The original reverse design by Horst Hahne on circulating coins has not been changed since its introduction. The denomination is also often used to issue circulating commemorative coins with various reverses.
Apart from the circulating coinage, both the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint have extensive programs issuing $2 coins for collectors (Non-Circulating Legal Tender, or NCLT), such as this one.
The Australian two dollar coin denomination (written as $2) was introduced in 1988 to replace a banknote of the same value. Its original ("definitive") design depicts an Aboriginal Elder and is issued every year. The Royal Australian Mint also uses the denomination to issue a large variety of commemorative coins with the same size and composition - such as this one.
On the 50th anniversary of Australian decimal currency in 2016, the Royal Australian Mint released a special series of coins commemorating the earlier, pre-decimal currency of the country. The modern circulating designs were joined by depictions of Australia's pre decimal coins on the obverse.
The original $2 coin with this obverse was released into circulation in 2016. This 2018-dated coin repeats the design, but was only released in a collector set. |
