Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.

This coloured and specially shaped coin is part of New Zealand Mint collection dedicated to characters and themes from the Star Wars series of movies, and is part of the Faces of the Empire series; it features an Imperial Snowtrooper Helmet.

The Mint says about it:
Ruthless and efficient, Snowtroopers are Stormtroopers trained for operations in arctic conditions. The coin follows the shape of the Imperial Snowtrooper’s headgear. This minimalist coin is coloured to replicate the helmet and sports additional relief to add interest to the design.

As a legal tender coin, it features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. A large display window in the box makes it perfect for immediate display. A Certificate of Authenticity has been added to the back of the case along with a holographic sticker confirming the coin’s unique number.
