Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous famous movie characters.
This coloured and specially shaped coin is part of New Zealand Mint collection dedicated to characters and themes from the Star Wars series of movies, and is part of the Faces of the Empire series; it features an Imperial Patrol Trooper Helmet.
The Mint says about it: As the rapid response specialist variant of the Empire’s Stormtroopers, Imperial Patrol Troopers were used to police urban areas, often patrolling their beat on Speeder Bikes. This detailed coin is coloured to replicate this Trooper's helmet and sports additional relief to add interest to the design.
As a legal tender coin, it features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and this is further confirmed by a Certificate of Authenticity on the box. This also means that it has a finite mintage, so each coin has a unique number detailed on the box.
The Star Wars branded box is compact and includes a large window so it’s ready for display. Flip-open the case to find the specifications for the coin, which is inside a custom-made acrylic case. |
