Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature characters and themes from popular culture.
This coloured rectangular coin is the first release in the Spider-Man Villains series by the New Zealand Mint portraying characters from Marvel comics, and features Doctor Octopus.
Doctor Octopus, whose real name is Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius, worked for Oscorp and is one of the main antagonists of Spider-Man. In order to supply an entire city with electricity, he carried out experiments with a new type of machine and an artificial sun. His wife Rosalie died in an accident during his experiments and he himself lost control of the mechanical tentacles attached to his back and from then on was controlled by the intelligent gripping arms. After he was supposed to hand Spider-Man over to Harry Osborn in exchange for trithium, he regained control of the tentacles in the final battle with Spider-Man and sacrificed his own life and his machine by letting himself sink into the Hudson River with it. |
