Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature characters and themes from popular culture.
This coloured rectangular coin is the third release in the Spider-Man Villains series by the New Zealand Mint portraying characters from Marvel comics, and features Sandman.
Sandman, whose real name is William Baker alias Flint Marko, was irradiated by the explosion of a nuclear reactor when he sought refuge on a military base after breaking out of prison. The effects of the radiation drastically changed his body - from then on he was able to turn completely into sand, form any weapon from his arm and even take the shape of a sand tornado. The plot surrounding the Sandman is always characterized by his desire to help his terminally ill daughter Penny, which, after overcoming some adversity and with the help of Spider-Man, he ultimately succeeds in doing. |
