Obverse

Head of Queen Victoria facing left wearing ribbon in her hair; around, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA; below, 1842.

Obverse 1 by Marsh (1838 - 1858): The bust is smaller than on later coins, the front ribbon on the top of the Queen's head is noticeably wider than the other ribbons. The lower truncation does not enter into the area of the legend.

No designer's initials W.W. at the truncation of the Queen's neck (unlike on full sovereigns).
