The Australian half ounce silver piece (abbreviated as 1/2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products. Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used. This is the third and final release in the Perth Mint's Shark series and features the Tiger Shark, commonly known as the “Sea Tiger”, which is the fourth-largest shark in the world. The tiger shark, commonly known as the “Sea Tiger”, is the fourth-largest shark in the world. Tiger sharks get their name from eye-catching dark vertical stripes found on young sharks, also known as pups. As these pups mature into adults, the dark stripes begin to fade. The skin of a tiger shark typically ranges from blue to light green with a white or light-yellow underbelly, giving it great camouflage when seen from above or below. Tiger sharks enjoy warm waters and can easily be spotted near the surface in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world such as Hawaii. | ||||||
