The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This two-ounce silver coin with a face value of $2 was issued as part of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III to mark the Chinese Year of the Dragon (10 February 2024 - 28 January 2025). Its reverse has a mother of pearl insert, and - just as with the opal coins - has a design that differs from the other Year of the Dragon coins issued by the mint the same year.

In traditional Chinese culture, the serpent-like dragon is revered as a divine creature and potent symbol of power, wealth, and good fortune. Chinese art often depicts a pair of dragons chasing or fighting over a pearl, a symbol of wisdom and immortality. To be born in the Year of the Dragon, including 2024 and every 12th preceding year, is considered particularly lucky. |

The obverse of the coin displays the bust of King Charles III, which depicts him bare-headed (uncrowned) and wearing a suit and tie, facing left.
Below the shoulder truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials DT (for Dan Thorne).
Around, the monarch's legend and the face value of the coin: CHARLES III AUSTRALIA · 2 DOLLARS ·.
The effigy is smaller than usual, allowing for more space in the centre of the obverse which is patterned with rays radiating from the centre. |

The reverse design portrays two dragons on a background of clouds, representing their heavenly realm. The mythical creatures surround a precision carved mother of pearl centrepiece featuring a three-dimensional sterling silver representation of the Chinese character for "dragon", 龍.
In small letters around above right, the inscription YEAR OF THE DRAGON. Aound below left, the date of issue and the precious metal content: 2024 2oz 9999 SILVER (two troy ounces of 99.99% silver).
The mint mark of the Perth Mint is on the left; instead of the usual P, it is P125 in celebration of the mint's 125th anniversary. The designer's initials JM (for Ing Ing Jong) are on the dragon's foot below right. |
