The Australian five ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 5 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This five-ounce silver coin with a face value of $8 was issued as part of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III to mark the 2024 Chinese Year of the Dragon (10 February 2024 - 28 January 2025). It is a high relief proof struck on a thicker flan than the bullion five-ounce piece, meaning that it has a smaller diameter.

The dragon is a creature of exceptional importance in Chinese culture and Eastern mythology. Regarded as a divine, wise, and benevolent being, it is a symbol of power, wealth, and success. To be born in the Year of the Dragon is considered particularly lucky. Bestowed with instinctive bravery, persistence, and intelligence, dragons are said to be ambitious, charismatic, and natural leaders.
Struck in high relief, the coin portrays a serpentine-shaped dragon and a flaming pearl, a symbol of wisdom. The reverse art includes references to the dragon’s control of the elements with stylised waves and water cascading from its mouth. |

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022 · AUSTRALIA · 5oz 9999 Ag 8 DOLLARS ·.
The legend is interrupted by the "memorial" inclusion of the dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "5oz 9999 Ag" means "five troy ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum. |

The reverse of the coin portrays a Chinese mythical dragon facing the viewer, with stylised waves and fog - allusions to its control of the elements, and a flaming pearl of wisdom.
Below it, the Chinese character for "dragon": 龍, below which DRAGON and 2024.
The mint mark of the Perth Mint is below right; instead of the traditional P, it is P125, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the mint. The designer's initials IJ (for Ing Ing Jong) are above right.
The face value and the precious metal content are on the obverse. |

Packaging: accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, the coin is presented in a classic display case with a geometric design on its transparent lid. The case comes in an illustrated shipper featuring a dragon. When arrayed with other shippers from the series, the resulting diorama depicts the legend of The Great Race, in which 12 animals successfully compete for a position in the lunar zodiac.
