Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.

This rectangular coin is part of a New Zealand Mint collection featuring Marvel characters, and is dedicated to Spider-Man.

The mint says about it:
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962 on the pages of Marvel’s Amazing Fantasy #15 comic book, Spider-Man has come to life in a wide variety of ways since then. This lovable and rather awkward teenage Super Hero entered the hearts of fans all over the world. Now, the hero is celebrated each year with Spider-Man Day on August 1.

The rectangular coin displays a detailed, coloured image of the hero doing what he does best! The buildings behind him have been left engraved with a frosted finish which contrasts brilliantly with the mirrored background. Flip the coin over to the obverse to find the Public Seal of Niue which confirms it as legal tender.

Each coin is held in an acrylic capsule and then tucked inside a compact, themed box. The large window on the front ensures you can easily show it off in your Marvel collection! Printed on the back of the box is a Certificate of Authenticity and the coin’s unique number in the mintage.
