Coin | Gold Tenth-Ounce 2021 Year of the Ox, Coloured |

|
The Australian tenth-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1/10 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This tenth-ounce coloured gold premium bullion coin with a face value of $15 was issued as part of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III to mark the Chinese Year of the Ox (12 February 2021 - 31 January 2022). |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1/10oz 9999 Au 15 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1/10 oz 9999 Au" means "one tenth of a troy ounce of 99.99% gold" - Au is abbreviated from the Latin word for gold, Aurum. |

The reverse of the coin features a coloured image of a strong ox in front of a persimmon tree in the foreground, and in the background a wooden fence.
Oxen possess an enormous work force and are the oldest documented draft animals, which are used in agriculture and other fields. Those born under the sign of the Chinese ox are considered friendly, intelligent, honest and reliable. They are characterised by a high work ethic, logical thinking and composure.
Below left, the Chinese character for "ox" 牛 (pronounced niú under the Pinyin system);vertically to the left of that, OX 2021.
The mint mark P of the Perth Mint below right. The designer's initial W (for Wang Shen Yong) is at the base of the tree.
The face value and the precious metal content are on the obverse. |
