The Australian twentieth-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1/20 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin is part of the Australian Nugget bullion series by the Perth Mint, and features a Red Kangaroo on the reverse.
Before this, the series had featured natural gold nuggets discovered in Australia. With this design (first issued in 1989 as a proof only), the series changed direction and started featuring kangaroos instead. It was eventually renamed the Australian Kangaroo.

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right (her effigy known as the "Third Portrait"). The Queen is wearing the royal diadem which she wears on her way to and from the State Opening of Parliament, a pearl necklace and earrings.
Incuse in tiny letters on the neck truncation, the designer's initials RDM (for Raphael David Maklouf).

The reverse features a realistic representation of a Red Kangaroo leaping to left, with a starburst background (stylised rays of sunlight not quite reaching the centre).
Below it, the inscription RED KANGAROO.
Around above, the name of the series and the precious metal content: THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1/20 OZ. 9999 GOLD (one twentieth of a troy ounce of 99.99% gold).
