The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This silver bullion coin is the third design in the Australian Nugget Series from the Perth Mint, and the first to come in the two-ounce silver format. After dedicating the first two issues of the Series to the "Welcome Stranger" and the "Hand of Faith" nuggets, the mint celebrates 90 years since the discovery of the Golden Eagle natural gold nugget with this issue.
The Mint says about it:
"This coin commemorates 90 years since the discovery of the Golden Eagle natural gold nugget. Named for its remarkable resemblance to a bird of prey in flight, Golden Eagle was discovered by prospector James Larcombe’s 17-year-old son at the height of the Great Depression in January 1931 near Widgiemooltha, a small town 630 kilometres east of Perth. Weighing 1,136 oz (35.3 kg), the sensational discovery remains the biggest nugget known to have been unearthed in Western Australia."
The reverses of the coins in the series are based on a 1986 four-coin set issued by the Perth Mint, the coins in which were designed by Stuart Devlin. |

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 2 DOLLARS ·.

The reverse of the coin portrays the famous Golden Eagle Nugget on a background of radial lines. In tiny letters in the lowest part of the nugget, the initials of the designer of the original coin series: SD (for Stuart Devlin).
Around below in the central circle, the name of the nugget and the year of its discovery: GOLDEN EAGLE 1931.
Around above, the name of the series: AUSTRALIAN NUGGET. Around below, the date of issue and the precious metal content, 2021 2oz 9999 SILVER (two troy ounces of 99.99% silver). The P mint mark of the Pert Mint is in the rim to the right. |
