Two Dollars 2019 Wallabies (multi-colour), Coin from Australia - detailed information

Two Dollars 2019 Wallabies (multi-colour), Coin from Australia
CoinTwo Dollars 2019 Wallabies (multi-colour)

The Australian two dollar coin denomination was introduced on 20 June 1988, when it replaced the banknote of the same value. The regular reverse design by Horst Hahne features a representation of the head and shoulders of a traditional Australian Aboriginal elder.

The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative $2 coins such as this one, many of them coloured.

The Royal Australian Mint issued this coin to show support for the Wallabies (the Australian national rugby union team) in their bid to become World Champions and raise the William Webb Ellis Cup at the 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament held in Japan. The reverse design features the logo of the team and its colours.

Coins issued in 2019 have now been in circulation for only one year.

Crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2019.

The reverse design features a stylised representation of a wallaby holding a football (the Australia national rugby union team logo), standing next to a partially obscured 5‑pointed star, within a central circle.

In the background, partially obscured by the central circle, is another circle containing a coloured pattern with dark green, light green and yellow irregular shapes; and four representations of a 7-pointed star, each partially obscured, placed at quarter intervals around the outer edge of the coin.

Around above, the value and denomination TWO DOLLARS. Around below, WALLABIES AUSTRALIA.

Notes

The coin designs were approved by the Assistant Treasurer in Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination (No. 4) 2019 on 12 July 2019 and were released on 18 September 2019 in conjunction with Woolworths, where they were sold carded for $3, and were available in the tills as change for purchases.

The coins carry the Fourth Portrait of the Queen even though some Australian $2 coins were issued earlier with the Fifth Portrait.
