Two Dollars 2019 Police Remembrance (Blue and White), Coin from Australia
CoinTwo Dollars 2019 Police Remembrance (Blue and White)

The Australian two dollar coin denomination was introduced on 20 June 1988, when it replaced the banknote of the same value. The regular reverse design by Horst Hahne features a representation of the head and shoulders of a traditional Australian Aboriginal elder.

The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative $2 coins such as this one, many of them coloured.

The Police Remembrance $2 coloured coin marks the 30th anniversary of National Police Remembrance Day. Its design resembles a police badge, incorporating St Edwards Crown (often referred to as the "Queen’s Crown") in the centre, and the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star (also known as the Star of Federation), which represents the 1901 Federation of Australia. The star is surrounded by a wreath, which represents victory. The blue and white chequered pattern known as a Sillitoe Tartan (commonly known as "dicing") is used by police forces throughout Australia and is displayed on uniforms and vehicles. This coin design unifies all of Australia’s police forces in a spirit of solemn remembrance and gratitude.

Coins issued in 2019 have now been in circulation for less than one year.

Crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2019.

In the centre of the reverse is a representation of St Edward’s Crown within a circle, surrounded by an ornamental border containing a white and blue coloured check pattern; around that, a seven-pointed start is superimposed on a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon with the text POLICE on it.

Around above, the value and denomination TWO DOLLARS; around below, the inscription REMEMBRANCE; the initials of the designer Adam Ball are in relief between the ribbon and the inscription: AWB.

Coins issued in presentation folders (carded) have a C privy mark (for Canberra) in the left field between the two inscriptions (to the left of the T in TWO DOLLARS).

Notes

National Police Remembrance Day is held every year on 29 September to remember police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The significance of the date 29 September being "the Feast of St Michael the Archangel, patron saint of police and peacemakers". The observance of National Police Remembrance Day grants police the opportunity to commemorate their fallen colleagues and ensure their legacies are preserved; enable family members to grieve and honour their lost loved ones; and act as a reminder to the public of the ultimate price that police might be called upon to pay, as they protect and serve the Australian people.

The coin designs were approved by the Assistant Treasurer in Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination (No. 2) 2019 on 26 March 2019 and were released on 11 September 2019.
