The Australian two dollar coin denomination was introduced on 20 June 1988, when it replaced the banknote of the same value. The regular reverse design by Horst Hahne features a representation of the head and shoulders of a traditional Australian Aboriginal elder. The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative $2 coins such as this one, many of them coloured. This coin is part of a six-coin series dedicated to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. They were struck in 2020 but their release was postponed when the Games themselves were postponed. The five Olympic coins featuring the colours of the Olympic circles - including the Green "Dedication" $2 - were first released in a set on 14 July 2021. Individual coins were issued into general circulation at one week intervals, with this one being fifth, on 11 August 2021. | ||||||
