Two Dollars 2019 Repatriation (Black and Red), Coin from Australia - detailed information

Two Dollars 2019 Repatriation (Black and Red), Coin from Australia
CoinTwo Dollars 2019 Repatriation (Black and Red)

The Australian two dollar coin denomination was introduced on 20 June 1988, when it replaced the banknote of the same value. The regular reverse design by Horst Hahne features a representation of the head and shoulders of a traditional Australian Aboriginal elder.

The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative $2 coins such as this one, many of them coloured.

These two dollar coins continue the Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day) series. Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. The Royal Australian Mint issued a series of coins commemorating this, starting in 2012, with differently designed and coloured reverses (in some years more than one type): $2 2012 Remembrance Day (Poppy), $2 2014 Remembrance Day (Green), $2 2015 Remembrance Day (Red), $2 2015 Remembrance Day (Orange), $2 2017 Australian War Memorial (multi-coloured), $2 2017 Remembrance Day (Blue and Green), $2 2018 Eternal Flame (multi-coloured) and $2 2018 Armistice (Red).

The Repatriation $2 coloured coin marks the centenary (100 years anniversary) of the Repatriation for Australian soldiers and nurses after the First World War. The centre of the reverse depicts a graphic element taken from the First World War Returned from Active Service badge.

Coins issued in 2019 have now been in circulation for less than one year.

Crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2019.

In the centre of the reverse, over four concentric circles, there is a representation of St Edward’s Crown, two crossed swords, a pair of wings, an anchor and a chain - elements of the First World War Returned from Active Service badge issued to returning Australian soldiers between 1914 to 1919. Symbolically, the inclusion of this badge represents the commencement of the Repatriation.

The badge featured on the coin is framed by a circular colour print depicting black arrows and eight red and black petal motifs. The arrows, inspired by the iconic Rising Sun, represent the journey home of Australian service personnel over the last 100 years. The petals represent the Flanders Field poppy, an iconic symbol of remembrance, with each petal symbolising the six states and two territories of Australia.

Around the design, the inscription ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF REPATRIATION; around below, the value and denomination TWO DOLLARS; the initials of the designer Adam Ball are in relief between the badge and the value: AWB.

Coins issued in presentation folders (carded) have a C privy mark (for Canberra) between the two inscriptions (to the right of the S in TWO DOLLARS).

Notes

The First World War Returned from Active Service badges were issued to returning Australian soldiers between 1914 to 1919; the badge depicts the St Edward’s Crown with the rising sun. Below is a scroll with the text AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES (not shown on the coins).

The coin designs were approved by the Assistant Treasurer in Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination (No. 2) 2019 on 26 March 2019 and were released on 23 April 2019.
