The Australian two dollar coin denomination was introduced on 20 June 1988, when it replaced the banknote of the same value. The regular reverse design by Horst Hahne features a representation of the head and shoulders of a traditional Australian Aboriginal elder. The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative $2 coins such as this one, many of them coloured. The Royal Australian Mint issued this coin to acknowledge the role of Indigenous Military Personnel - men and women who have served in the Australian military. Having served in every conflict and commitment involving Australian defence contingents, since Federation, including but not limited to, Gallipoli, Kokoda and Vietnam, the strength of Indigenous Service has been a constant throughout Australian history. Inspired by the artwork of Chern’ee Sutton, the design of the coin is rich with Indigenous and military symbols. Coins issued in 2021 have now been in circulation for only one year. | ||||||
