Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.

This coin featuring Green Lantern is part of an extensive New Zealand Mint series featuring DC Comics characters.

The mint says about it:
Struck from 1oz of pure silver, this coin features a stunning engraving of Green Lantern standing strong. His emblem is beside him, along with an illustration of him, ready to serve some intergalactic justice. Frosted and mirror-like finishing further enhance this incredible design. Found on the obverse is the Public Seal of Niue, to confirm the coin as legal tender.

Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, each coin comes encased in an acrylic capsule for protection and is presented in a colourful box with powerful illustrations of the DC Comics hero. On the back is a Certificate of Authenticity and the coin’s unique number in the mintage of 5,000.
