Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of coins under the authority of Niue. Most of these are commemorative and collector issues dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - including the very large ten ounces of silver format (abbreviated as 10 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This rectangular coin (silver bar) is part of New Zealand Mint collection dedicated to characters and themes from the Star Wars series of movies, and features the iconic scene from Star Wars where Han Solo is frozen in Carbonite.
The Mint says about it: As seen in the 1980 film, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, this hefty 10oz pure silver coin has been shaped like a bar and engraved to showcase the frozen intergalactic smuggler. An antique finish has also been applied to further highlight the detail.
Officially licensed, you will find the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the back side of the coin, which confirms it is legal tender. The worldwide availability is limited to just 1,000 coins!
Each eye-catching coin arrives nestled in black velvet inside a super-size, Star Wars-themed box. The window allows you to display your extraordinary collectible as is! A Certificate of Authenticity is printed on the box along with the serial number of the coin. |
