|Coin||Silver Ounce 2022 City Views - London|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) silver coins are denominated as either two pounds (£2) or five pounds (£5), depending on the occasion.
Initially, these were only of the Britannia type, but in 2015 the Royal Mint started to use the format for coins with other types of reverse designs, celebrating various aspects of British heritage.
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art.
This design is the first release in the City Views series and features London, the capital of England and of the United Kingdom.
The Mint says about it:
The great cities of the world are characterised by iconic landmarks that are treasured by all of humanity. Our new City Views series celebrates breathtaking views of these architectural marvels and preserves their legacy for generations to come. The coin series will run over a number of years, with the designs featuring cities from around the world. The series begins with a coin featuring the Tower of London - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by William the Conqueror as a statement of his power, this imposing stone fortress has dominated the city’s skyline for more than a thousand years. Featuring a reverse design adapted from a work by the Bohemian artist Wenceslaus Hollar (1607 - 1677) whose views of London form an important historical record of the city, the coin is available in a range of gold and silver editions.
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait").
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend, followed by the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS · 2022 ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English and the year.
The reverse design shows a 17th century view of the Tower of London, as seen across the river Thames - in which many sailing ships and boats are depicted.
In the foreground, the (now demolished) Church of St Olave in Southwark - marked as S. Olafe; the Tower is in the background, its wharf marked as Tower Wharfe.
Around above, the inscription LONDON.
