Silver Ounce 2024 Star Wars - Han Solo and Chewbacca, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) silver coins are denominated as either two pounds (£2) or five pounds (£5), depending on the occasion.

Initially, these were only of the Britannia type, but in 2015 the Royal Mint started to use the format for coins with other types of reverse designs, celebrating various aspects of British heritage.

The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art.

This silver ounce denominated as £2 is the fourth and final release in a Royal Mint series celebrating one of the most popular movie franchises of all time - Star Wars, and specifically - the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the third installment of the saga. This design features film characters Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The mint says:
"It has been almost half a century since the world got its first glimpse of the Star Wars universe with the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Now, for the first time, the iconic characters of the original Star Wars trilogy will feature on official UK coins as part of a brand-new, four-coin collection dedicated to some of the most legendary partnerships from the series."
