Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a quarter ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/4 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum).

This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters and themes from The Lord of the Rings books and films, and features Mordor.

The mint says about it:
Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, this exquisite ¼oz gold coin shows a close-up image of the mighty Black Gate and Tower of the Teeth in Mordor, from The Lord of the Rings. It is fully engraved in brilliant detail with added relief and texture, using sandblasting. The mirror-finish background complements the .9999 pure gold wonderfully.

Confirming the coin as legal tender, the Public Seal of Niue is engraved on the obverse. The worldwide mintage is limited to just 300 coins.

Each piece is presented in a high-quality magnetised display case, with a themed outer box. A Certificate of Authenticity is included and features the coin’s unique number in the mintage.
