|Coin||Silver Three Ounces 2022 Lord of the Rings - The Shire|
Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, or are based on the troy ounce - for example, three ounces of silver (abbreviated as 3 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters and themes from the Lord of the Rings books and films, and features The Shire.
The Mint says about it:
Limited to a production of only 1,000, this large diameter 3oz silver coin presents the beautiful Shire from The Lord of the rings. Hobbit-holes and the delightful rolling hills of the Shire are engraved onto the silver. A mirror-finish sky and an antique finish completes this unique design.
Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, the coin is made from .999 pure silver and is legal tender. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II can be found on the obverse. It arrives nestled in velvet, inside a themed, modern and compact box. A Certificate of Authenticity is printed on the back of the box which also carries the coin’s unique number in the mintage.
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II NIUE TEN DOLLARS 2022.
The reverse of the coin features a hobbit-hole from The Shire, as described in The Lord of the Rings.
