Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - including this very large five ounces of silver format (abbreviated as 5 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coloured rectangular coin is part of a large range featuring Disney characters and movies, and is dedicated to Pinocchio.
"Pinocchio" is about a childless carpenter, Geppetto, who makes a wooden puppet named Pinocchio and fervently wishes for the puppet to become a flesh and blood boy. A fairy fulfills his wish and brings the wooden puppet to life. The journey of Pinocchio, his father Geppetto and his friend Jiminy Cricket is adventurous and full of danger. First, a fox and a tomcat sell the wooden boy to the puppet theater of Stromboli, then they take Pinocchio to an island full of children who can have fun there without any rules, only to be transformed into donkeys and sold by the shady coachman Lampwick. Pinocchio manages to escape, but when he gets home he finds that Geppetto is gone and has been swallowed by a whale. After Pinocchio is also swallowed by "Monstro", he and Geppetto make him sneeze and manage to escape on a raft. The escape from the whale ends with the raft being smashed and Pinocchio dying. As Geppetto mourns the loss of his son, Pinocchio is rewarded for his brave and selfless behavior, brought back to life and transformed into a real boy. |
