One Penny 2015 (Fourth Portrait), Coin from United Kingdom
CoinOne Penny 2015 (Fourth Portrait)

The one penny coin is currently the lowest circulating denomination of the British (decimal) Pound Sterling, after the half penny was demonetised in 1984. 1 penny equals 1/100th of a pound.

In August 2005 the Royal Mint launched a competition to find new reverse designs for all circulating coins apart from the £2 coin. The winner, announced in April 2008, was Matthew Dent, whose designs were gradually introduced into the circulating British coinage from mid-2008. In a world-first concept, the designs for the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins depict sections of the Royal Shield that form the whole shield when placed together. The shield in its entirety was featured on the £1 coin (now discontinued).

This 1p coin design, which replaced the earlier 1p design by Christopher Ironside, depicts the left section between the first and third quarter of the shield, representing England and Northern Ireland. The coin's obverse remains largely unchanged, but the beading (the ring of dots around the coin's circumference), which no longer features on the coin's reverse, has also been removed from the obverse.

One penny and two pence coins are legal tender only up to the sum of 20p; this means that it is permissible to refuse payment of sums greater than this amount in 1p and 2p coins in order to settle a debt.

1p coins issued in 2015 have now been circulating for ten years.

Obverse
United Kingdom / One Penny 2015 (Fourth Portrait) - obverse photo

The obverse shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2015. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith 2015.

Obverse Inscription ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2015
Reverse
United Kingdom / One Penny 2015 (Fourth Portrait) - reverse photo

A small section of the Royal Arms is visible (the left section between the first and third quarter of the shield, parts of the Lion and the Harp representing England and Northern Ireland). When put together, coins of the different denominations of British pennies add up to a whole shield with the full Royal Arms.

Around left, separated from the design by a vertical dotted line, the value and denomination ONE PENNY.

The designer's initials MD (for Matthew Dent) are incuse in small letters in the lower part of the vertical dotted line.

Notes

This is the last issue with Her Majesty's portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley (the "Fourth Portrait").

On 2 March 2015 the Royal Mint revealed a new effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which went into production that very day. This is only the fifth definitive portrait of The Queen to appear on British circulating coins since her accession to the throne in 1952, making it a very rare event indeed. It became the fourth portrait in circulation, joining those created in 1968, 1985 and 1998 (the effigy by Mary Gillick features on the pre-decimal coins which were demonetised in 1970, and on Maundy coinage which is not in normal circulation); together, the coins that carry them tell the story of Her Majesty’s lifetime and paint a compelling picture of the story of her reign.

The new portrait was designed by Jody Clark. He was the first Royal Mint engraver to be chosen to create a definitive royal coinage portrait in over 100 years.
