Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, or are based on the troy ounce - for example, three ounces of silver (abbreviated as 3 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
The fifth issue of the Disney Cinema Masterpieces was struck by the New Zealand Mint from three ounces of 99.9% silver in proof quality and is dedicated to the famous animated film Alice in Wonderland. The colourful design depicts the iconic scene from the film in which Alice enters the White Rabbit's house for the first time. In the foreground is a montage of images from the film, depicted on an engraved film reel. The reverse features the Public Seal of Niue as well as denomination and year of issue.
The Disney animated film "Alice in Wonderland" is based on the work of the same name by Lewis Carroll and was released back in 1951. The film begins with Alice being plagued by boredom on a balmy summer day and indulging in daydreaming. Soon a white rabbit crosses her path - Alice follows the frantic animal and thus gets into a surreal world that defies any sense of logic. In this world, she can change her body size with the help of cookies and drinks and not only meets the twins Tweedledee and Tweedledum as well as a pipe-smoking caterpillar, but also makes the acquaintance of the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat and the irascible Queen of Hearts, who demands the protagonist's head. Alice cannot escape Wonderland at first, but is then awakened by her sister and wakes up under the same tree under which she had previously fallen asleep while daydreaming. |
