Coin | Silver Two Ounces 2020 Dragon and Phoenix |
---|
|
The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
The Mint says about this coin: This remarkable figure eight-shaped antiqued coin showcases a phenomenal design combining Chinese symbols of luck, power and good fortune.
In Chinese culture, the dragon is revered as a divine creature and potent symbol of power, strength, wealth and fortune. The phoenix is an immortal bird whose rare appearance is believed to foreshadow harmony and peace. In feng shui, these mythical creatures are considered perfect matches for one another, representing "yin" and "yang" respectively in the Chinese philosophical account of natural balance and interdependence. The coin is shaped like the figure eight in honour of the number’s cultural significance in China as the luckiest number. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts at its centre the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. The effigy is very small, being in the centre of the figure-eight shape of the coin. There are no designer's initials on the portrait.
Around above, the monarch's legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA; around below, the precious metal content, date of issue and face value: 2oz 9999 Ag 2020 2 DOLLARS. "2 oz 9999 Ag" means "two ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum.
The background is decorated with parallel circles around each half of the figure eight, intersecting around the Queen's portrait. |
