The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin is part of the Perth Mint's Chinese Myths and Legends series, and features the Dragon and Tiger.
The Mint says about it:
Considered to be balancing forces in feng shui, the divine dragon and the earthly tiger are depicted on this exquisite silver coin chasing a flaming pearl, a metaphor for wisdom and enlightenment. A manifestation of female or "yin" energy, the tiger is a lucky animal associated with strength and bravery, while the dragon represents "yang" (male) energy and is a symbol of wealth and fortune.
The depth and detail of the design has been enhanced by its high relief finish. The Perth Mint’s proof quality high relief strike is renowned throughout the world for its stunning clarity and the additional detail it portrays. |

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2oz 9999 Ag 2018 2 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "2 oz 9999 Ag" means "two troy ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum. |

The reverse of the coin portrays a representation of a dragon and a tiger in pursuit of a flaming pearl, the symbol of wisdom.
Above right is the Perth Mint’s P mint mark. On the tiger's foot below left, the designer's initials TV, for Thomas Vaughan.
