Coin | Silver Two Ounces 2018 Two Dragons |

|
The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
The Mint says about this coin: In Chinese culture, the dragon is revered as a divine mythical creature, a symbol of power, strength, wealth and good fortune. The number eight is considered extremely lucky as the Chinese word for "eight" means good fortune or money. The number 8 is also uniquely symmetric, and when laid on its side, resembles the mathematical symbol for infinity. |

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits. In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley). The effigy is very small, being in the centre of the figure-eight shape of the coin.
Around above, the monarch's legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA; around below, the precious metal content, date of issue and face value: 2oz 9999 Ag 2018 2 DOLLARS. "2 oz 9999 Ag" means "two ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum.
The rings around the two holes are decorated with a pattern in which the figure 8 is repeated multiple times. |
