Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is the fourth issue in a series featuring coloured posters from the Lord of the Rings movies, and features The Hobbit.
The mint says about it: This rectangular coin is created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to feature the theatrical poster for the first film in the brilliant fantasy trilogy, An Unexpected Journey. Made of 1oz pure silver, the design is mostly in colour but for contrast, the film’s logo and the landscape Bilbo is entering have been engraved and frosted. A mirror-finish border completes this striking design. As legal tender, the Public Seal of Niue can be found on the obverse.
This piece is the whole package, arriving in a THE HOBBIT-themed box! The large window on the front ensures easy displaying of your coin. Printed on the back is a Certificate of Authenticity and the coin’s unique number in the limited mintage of just 3,000. |
