Half Sovereign 2022 Platinum Jubilee, Coin from Alderney - detailed information

The obverse if the coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, wearing the Imperial Crown (depicted as the Crown of Saint Edward) and pearl earrings.

Below the neck truncation, in small letters the initials of the designer JC, for Jody Clark.

The portrait is surrounded by a dented circle, around which a quote from the Queen's coronation speech: THE THINGS WHICH I HAVE HERE BEFORE PROMISED I WILL PERFORM AND KEEP. SO HELP ME GOD.

In larger letters around the rim, the monarch's legend and date of issue: ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REG · FID · DEF · 2022 · ALDERNEY CI. The first part of this is abbreviated from the Latin text "Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensatrix", and means "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith". Aldeney CI stands for Alderney, Channel Islands.

The reverse design of the coin is similar to the seated portrait of the Queen by Bernard Sindall which was made for a series of commemoratives in 1989 marking the 500th anniversary of the first hammered gold sovereign coin. The depiction of the Queen is reminiscent of the King Henry VII engraving of the sovereign on his throne; she is shown seated enthroned in King Edward's Chair as at her coronation, facing forward, just having received the Sceptre with the Cross, and the Rod with the Dove.
