The sovereign is a gold coin of the United Kingdom, with a nominal value of one pound sterling. Struck from 1817 until the present time, it was originally a circulating coin (see pre-decimal Sovereign) accepted in Britain and elsewhere in the world; it is now a bullion coin not intended for circulation, the intrinsic value of which is much higher than its face value. There are several denominations of the Sovereign: Five Sovereigns (Quintuple Sovereign, five pounds gold), Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign, Half Sovereign and Quarter Sovereign; the current sovereign - with face value of £1 is a continuation of the pre-decimal sovereign, and has been issued as a decimal coin since 1974.
Apart from the sovereigns of the United Kingdom, the British Crown dependency of Alderney has also authorised some mints to issue sovereigns under its jurisdiction. These are denominated in Alderney Pounds - the local variation of the Pound Sterling. There is a long-standing tradition in the United Kingdom that this type of coin does not have its value and denomination spelled out on the coin; this is not, however, the case with Alderney sovereigns - which have the face value written on them.

The obverse if the coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, wearing the Imperial Crown (depicted as the Crown of Saint Edward) and pearl earrings.
Below the neck truncation, in small letters the initials of the designer JC, for Jody Clark.
The portrait is surrounded by a dented circle, around which a quote from the Queen's coronation speech: THE THINGS WHICH I HAVE HERE BEFORE PROMISED I WILL PERFORM AND KEEP. SO HELP ME GOD.
In larger letters around the rim, the monarch's legend and date of issue: ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REG · FID · DEF · 2022 · ALDERNEY CI. The first part of this is abbreviated from the Latin text "Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensatrix", and means "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith". Aldeney CI stands for Alderney, Channel Islands. |

The reverse design of the coin is similar to the seated portrait of the Queen by Bernard Sindall which was made for a series of commemoratives in 1989 marking the 500th anniversary of the first hammered gold sovereign coin. The depiction of the Queen is reminiscent of the King Henry VII engraving of the sovereign on his throne; she is shown seated enthroned in King Edward's Chair as at her coronation, facing forward, just having received the Sceptre with the Cross, and the Rod with the Dove.
Behind the throne, an ornate glass window of Windsor Abbey, where the coronation took place.
Below right, in small letters the initials of the designer JC, for Jody Clark.
Around left and right, the inscription PLATINUM JUBILEE.
