Coin	Fifty Pence 2022 Platinum Jubilee

The British fifty pence (50p) coin - often pronounced fifty pee - is a unit of currency equalling one half of a pound sterling. It is a seven-sided coin formed as an equilateral-curve heptagon, or Reuleaux polygon - a curve of constant width, meaning that the diameter is constant across any bisection. This shape, which was revolutionary at the time, made it easily distinguishable from round coins both by feel and by sight, while its constant breadth allowed it to roll in vending machines.

The denomination was introduced in October 1969 with a large version of the coin; it was reduced in size in 1997, with the older coins being demonetised in 1998. The design of the new (smaller) type remained unchanged at that time, retaining Christopher Ironside's Britannia reverse. In 2008 though the regular reverse was changed to Matthew Dent's design which depict a section of the Royal Shield. The denomination has also been used extensively to issue one-year types of commemorative coins such as this one.

This commemorative fifty pence coin celebrates the Platinum Jubilee (70th anniversary) of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. It is the first coin issued in the 50p denomination to mark a royal event.

On the throne since 6 February 1952, at the date when the coin was issued Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the longest-serving female head of state in history, the oldest living and longest-reigning current monarch, and the oldest and longest-serving incumbent head of state.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait").

Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE · 2022 ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English and the year.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).

Reverse

The reverse design features a stylised frosted number 70 against a polished background.

Within the zero, the Royal cypher E II R (from Elizabeth II Regina - in Latin, Elizabeth the Second, Queen). The cypher is surmounted by St Edward's Crown. Below it, the Jubilee dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022.

In the field below, the designers' initials AR (for Andrew Ross) and DO (Deborah Osborne).

Notes

The coins were first issued in the full and commemorative mint sets of the year (base metal in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof grade, and Proof in precious metals); they are not included in the Definitive mint sets which only feature regular circulating designs. The Royal Mint then announced that 1.3 mln circulating coins will be released through Royal Mail post offices staring on 7 February 2022.

The Royal Mint also lists mintage of 17,030 coins "in trade packaging", 4,636 from the "strike your own coin" (SYOC) experience at the mint, and an additional 2,250 SYOC coins struck on 06/02/2022, to a total uncirculating mintage of 76,094.

There is another 50p Platinum Jubilee coin with the same reverse but with an equestrian effigy of the Queen on the obverse.
