Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes. A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature characters and themes from popular culture. This coloured coin commemorates 75 years since the so-called "Roswell Incident" which occurred in July 1947; it refers to the crash of an unknown flying object near the small town of Roswell in the U.S. state of New Mexico. Shortly after ranch foreman William "Mac" Brazel found and reported the debris, the U.S. Army Air Forces Base at Roswell (RAAF) issued a statement saying it was the debris of a "flying saucer." A headline to that effect, which appeared in the local newspaper on July 8, 1947, caused quite a stir. A few days later, the military retracted the report and clarified that the debris came from a weather balloon used for high-altitude wind measurements. Since then, speculation about the mysterious discovery in Roswell has not ceased. Numerous contradictions and statements, first voiced and then denied again, strengthened a group of people in their conviction that the crashed object could actually be a UFO. Thousands of people visit the city every year in the hope of discovering the truth. | ||||||||||||
