Coin | Silver Two Ounces 2018 End of WWI |

|
The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin issued by the Perth Mint commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the End of World War I in 2018.
The Mint says about it: The bloodshed of World War I ended in 1918 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. To mark the cessation of hostilities 100 years ago, The Perth Mint offers this carefully considered numismatic tribute honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who suffered the conflict’s unremitting brutality at Gallipoli, in the Middle East and on the Western Front. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2oz 9999 Ag 2018 2 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "2 oz 9999 Ag" means "two troy ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum.
The background is frosted. |

Reverse | |
The coin’s reverse portrays a flying dove - which has for millennia symbolised peace. The bird is carrying a poppy, another poignant symbol in its beak. Red poppies were the first flowers to bloom in the devastated battlefields of Western Europe and soon became universally associated with the act of remembrance.
In the background of the centre, the word PEACE written many times in various fonts; the background is frosted.
In the left part of the rim, the P mint mark of the Perth Mint. The designer's initial's AH (for Aleysha Howarth) are above right at the tip of the bird's wing.
In the rim above, the date of the end of World War I - 1918; around below, the inscription END of WORLD WAR I. |
