|Coin||Silver Two Ounces 2021 Mother and Baby Platypus|
The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This two-ounce silver coin with a face value of $2 is part of the Perth Mint's bullion coin range featuring native animals, and depicts a Mother and baby Platypus.
The Mint says about it:
The Perth Mint is excited to release the fourth design in our Mother and Baby Series with this 2oz silver bullion piedfort coin featuring a delightful representation of familial love in the Australian landscape. The coin’s reverse depicts Australia’s iconic platypus swimming with its baby.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2oz 9999 Ag 2021 2 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "2oz 9999 Ag" means "two troy ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum.
The background is of radial lines radiating from the centre of the portrait.
The coin’s reverse depicts Australia’s iconic platypus swimming with its baby, on a background of radial lines.
In small letters below, the designer's initials MR (for Monique Reeves). The Perth Mint's traditional P mint mark is on the left (or right? the Mint-supplied image has two?).
There is no inscription.
