One Pound 2010 Belfast, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

One Pound 2010 Belfast, Coin from United Kingdom (demonetised 2017)
CoinOne Pound 2010 Belfast

By 1980 it had become apparent that with the general decline in purchasing power, the £1 unit of currency was more appropriate to a coin than a banknote. After consultation with many groups including retailers and special interest groups, the Government announced on 31 July 1981 that a new £1 coin that was to be issued on 21 April 1983. Since its launch the £1 has always represented the United Kingdom and its constituent parts; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The £1 coin in base metal (as opposed to the gold sovereign, which has a nominal face value of one pound too), nickel-brass was introduced in 1983, as a replacement for the £1 banknote. The reverse design of the first £1 coin showed a depiction of the Royal Coat of Arms, representing the United Kingdom as a whole. It was issued until 2015 in rotation with other designs representing Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England, alternating each year in that order.

Initially, Northern Ireland was represented by the Flax and Diadem type of one pound coins, then by the Celtic Cross One Pound in 2001 and the Egyptian Arch Bridge One Pound in 2006.

2010 saw the launch of an entirely new £1 coin series which focused on the four capital cities of the UK - the "City Series". It was the first time in a "home countries" £1 coin series that two coins were released in the same year. The two 2010 £1 coins represented London and Belfast. This is the 2010 Belfast £1 coin.

Northern Ireland was later represented by the 2014 One Pound with the floral emblem of Northern Ireland.

Coins issued in 2010 circulated for seven years until they were demonetised in 2017 and replaced with the current bimetallic one pound coin.

Obverse
United Kingdom / One Pound 2010 Belfast - obverse photo

The obverse shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2010. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith 2010.

Obverse Inscription ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2010
Reverse

A depiction of the official badges of the capital cities of the United Kingdom, with those of Edinburgh, London and Cardiff (in that order), smaller, around below. The principal focus, larger and in the centre, is the badge of Belfast. It is a shield divided in two horizontally; the top of the shield has a point-down triangle with a repeating pattern that represents fur; in a square in the top left corner there is a bell; in the lower part of the shield there is a sailing ship.

The name of the city BELFAST is around top. The value and denomination ONE POUND are around left and right, divided by the badge.

64,461 brilliant uncirculated coins in presentation folder
? brilliant uncirculated in sets
34,438 proofs

The edge inscription PRO TANTO QUID RETRIBUAMUS means "what shall we give in return for so much" and is the motto of Belfast.

About the design, the Royal Mint says: "Belfast used a coat of arms on its seal as early as 1643, but it was not until 1890 that the arms were granted officially. The shield of the coat of arms of Belfast provided an appropriate reverse for the 2010 £1 coin which represented Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the City Series. Since the city port of Belfast has always been a busy shipbuilding centre, it was not surprising that a sea-going vessel should dominate the shield. The triangular pattern came from the arms of the Chichester family, while the bell was a simple reference to the city's name and appeared on tokens issued by Belfast tradesmen in the seventeenth century."
