One Pound 2014 Northern Ireland, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

One Pound 2014 Northern Ireland, Coin from United Kingdom (demonetised 2017)
CoinOne Pound 2014 Northern Ireland

By 1980 it had become apparent that with the general decline in purchasing power, the £1 unit of currency was more appropriate to a coin than a banknote. After consultation with many groups including retailers and special interest groups, the Government announced on 31 July 1981 that a new £1 coin that was to be issued on 21 April 1983. Since its launch the £1 has always represented the United Kingdom and its constituent parts; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The £1 coin in base metal (as opposed to the gold sovereign, which has a nominal face value of one pound too), nickel-brass was introduced in 1983, as a replacement for the £1 banknote. The reverse design of the first £1 coin showed a depiction of the Royal Coat of Arms, representing the United Kingdom as a whole. It was issued until 2015 in rotation with other designs representing Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England, alternating each year in that order.

Initially, Northern Ireland was represented by the Flax and Diadem type of one pound coins, then by the Celtic Cross One Pound in 2001, the Egyptian Arch Bridge One Pound in 2006 and the 2010 Belfast One Pound.

The last "home countries" £1 coin series depicts pairs of floral emblems of each part of the United Kingdom. This 2014 coin shows the shamrock and flax to represent Northern Ireland; another one issued the same year represented Scotland.

Coins issued in 2014 circulated for only three years until they were demonetised in 2017 and replaced with the current bimetallic one pound coin.

Obverse

Crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH · II · D · G REG · F · D · 2014. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith 2014.

5,780,000 coins released into circulation
17,697 brilliant uncirculated in sets
14,124 proofs

The edge inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN means "An ornament and a safeguard" and is a quote from Virgil's Aeneid.

About the design, the Royal Mint says:
"In 2014 two new £1 coins - one for Northern Ireland and one for Scotland - completed the series of four that began in 2013 with coins for England and Wales. The coins all featured designs by Timothy Noad, who is a professional calligrapher and a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. The coins continued the tradition of honouring the home nations of Britain on the £1 coin by incorporating familiar floral emblems. But, for the first time ever, they were paired together with other less well-known floral symbols in one reverse design. This design featured the shamrock and flax for Northern Ireland."
