Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
The Bambi and Flower coin is part of an extensive New Zealand Mint series featuring Disney characters, and was issued to mark the 80th Anniversary of Bambi.
The Mint says about it: As part of our special Disney’s Bambi 80th anniversary collection, this beautiful 1oz pure silver coin features a coloured image of Bambi and Flower against the background of the forest. The patch of flowers between them has been frosted to accentuate the silver, with some flashes of mirror finish applied sporadically to further enrich the design.
The engraving along the bottom confirms it’s of .999 fine silver and provides the Disney authentication. As a legal tender coin, the obverse includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. To add extra charm to the coin, the mintage is set at just 1,942 - which reflects the year the film was released.
Officially licensed, it is placed in a special edition Bambi 80th anniversary-themed box, which incorporates an image of Bambi and Flower as seen on the coin. A Certificate of Authenticity is printed at the back of the box along with the coin’s unique number. |
