Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This 101 Dalmatians coin is part of an extensive New Zealand Mint range featuring Disney characters, and depicts Cruella de Vil.
The mint says about it: Made from 1oz of pure silver, this de-vil-ishly charming piece displays a fur-raising moment from the film where the outlandish and obsessed Disney’s Cruella is chasing after the puppies in her car.
The mountain behind her has been frosted, which is a wonderful contrast against the coloured image. A mirror finish background makes the silver gleam! The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll can be found on the obverse, confirming it as legal tender.
Officially licensed, each coin arrives in a custom-designed box featuring the same image as seen on the coin. A Certificate of Authenticity and the coin’s unique number in its limited mintage of 2,000 can be found on the back. |
