Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coloured silver coin is dedicated to the horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film was directed by Wes Craven and released in 1984.
In "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Freddy Krueger brutally massacres his victims in their dreams. The film is considered a classic among the so-called slasher films, in which teenagers are haunted by a killer. The same genre also includes "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween".
The mint says about the coin: Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, this nightmarish 1oz pure silver coin depicts a coloured image of Freddy Krueger showcasing his razor-sharp glove. His iconic coloured green and red striped sweater contrasts well against his frosted silhouette. Surrounding him are the carvings of his evil words.
The custom-designed packaging includes more artwork of his knife hand to complement the coin inside, which is tucked in velvet. Each box has a Certificate of Authenticity printed on it, along with confirmation of the coin’s unique serial number in the limited 2,000 mintage. |
