Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
The Bambi and Thumper coin is part of an extensive New Zealand Mint series featuring Disney characters, and was issued to mark the 80th Anniversary of Bambi.
The Mint says about it: Officially licensed, this wonderful coin features a coloured image of Bambi and Thumper against the background of the forest, where patches of frosting accentuate the silver and enrich the design. A flash of silver can also be seen under Bambi’s hooves. The engraving along the bottom confirms it’s a full 1oz of .999 fine silver and provides the Disney authentication. As a legal tender coin, the obverse includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. To make the coin more appealing, the mintage is set at just 1,942 - to reflect the year the film was released.
It is placed in a special edition Bambi 80th anniversary themed box, which incorporates a wider image of the coin with Bambi, Thumper and the other woodland creatures. A Certificate of Authenticity is printed at the back of the box along with the coin’s unique number. |
